Afghanistan
A young, agriculture-led economy of nearly 44 million people, with substantial and largely undeveloped mineral resources.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan is one of the world's youngest populations, approaching 44 million people. The World Bank estimates nominal GDP at about US$17.8 billion in 2024, with real growth of 2.5% in 2024 and an estimated 4.3% in 2025. Agriculture, mining, construction and trade are the principal activities; services account for roughly half of gross value added and agriculture for close to 45% of employment.
Inflation has been low, at about 2.6%. Per-capita income has nevertheless been broadly flat, as population growth continues to outpace output. The country holds significant mineral deposits — copper, iron ore, lithium and rare earths among them — that remain largely undeveloped. Figures for Afghanistan are estimates: the IMF has paused its engagement and publishes no projections beyond 2025.
